The mission of the St. Tammany Art Association is to provide quality programming and cultural enrichment to the community, to support established artists, promote emerging artists, and produce educational arts related activities for adults and children and in doing so, enhance life in St. Tammany Parish. STAA strives to be a flexible resource for the arts community, offering workshops and classes by working artists and art educators from around the USA

What’s Happening at STAA

This February at STAA, classes take the lead in the main gallery with an Encaustic Monotype class February 1-3, Drawing and Painting classes throughout the month, Art of Asia art history survey, and performance classes for kids 5-16.  Click on our Classes Menu for a complete list of current classes in STAA’s Art House Academy, or on the Calendar menu for calendar of events through spring 2008.

MARCH 10: SPRING FOR ART 2007

This annual event is the season opener for the 2007 Art Walk season in downtown Covington.

From 6-10 pm, the historic St. John district and surrounding areas feature an Art Walk— closed to vehicle traffic— free music at various locations, new art work at galleries along Columbia Street and at various businesses and restaurants, and fine shopping and dining along Lee Lane, Rutland, Boston and New Hampshire Streets.

OPEN HOUSE and CHARLES BLANK SHOW

STAA’s exhibit for Spring for Art 2007 is a retrospective of the work of Charles Blank, a former teacher at STAA, and an Open House with demonstrations by Art House Academy artists throughout the facility.  Demonstration schedules will be posted at STAA in mid-February and during the event.

This year, STAA’s Summer Theater Camp will be held in the newly-renovated auditorium at the Greater Covington Center, 317 N. Jefferson St.

Performances

Friday, July 13 @ 7pm and Saturday, July 14 @ 2 pm

Tickets $7, all ages

Directors Jennifer Harageones Patterson and Shawn Patterson and renowned educator, director and producer Frank Levy have developed a complete theater camp experience for all participants, including acting, singing, theatrical games and terminology, choreography and costumes.  A full production in just one week with performances videotaped for community access public television.

Performance Chorus students of Shawn and Jennifer Patterson perform Broadway-themed songs as the conclusion of the Performance Chorus class at STAA.  We are registering students now for Fall 2007 sessions of performance and acting classes—call 892-8650.

APRIL 14: EDUCATIONAL LECTURE AND BOOK READING

5-7 pm, Covington attorney Maurice LeGardeur reads from his “Bard of Boston Street” and autograph copies of his new book. 

7-8 pm, STAA hosts speakers to provide an educational talk on the Charles Blank exhibit.

MAY 12: PORTRAITURE EXHIBITION-OPEN CALL

STAA hosts an all portraiture show with opening reception from 6-9 pm

STAA Members’ Gallery

The Members’ Gallery at the Art House celebrates the talents of its members, featuring work for sale by members of the organization. With some 30 artists and dozens of pieces, the gallery exhibits a wide range of media including: paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor, encaustic and mixed media, functional pottery, photography, handmade books, figurative sculpture and digital designs.

STAA accepts original artwork from any active member throughout the year, rotating displays in conjunction with major art openings (approximately every two months).  Artists should submit work for selection by February 28 for Spring for Art on March 10.  Questions, call (985) 892-8650.

The gallery has wall, pedestal and glass showcases available for displays, and all media will be considered. Artwork must be original, for sale, and ready for presentation with wire on back (no sawtooth hangers, please).  Artist agrees STAA retains a 35% commission on sale of art.
